Corning just announced their latest glass, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, at MWC 2026. It’s set to be the standard for the new Motorola Razr Fold and likely the next wave of flagship phones.
The big claim this year is "20-drop resilience" and better performance on rough surfaces like concrete. While that sounds like you can finally ditch the case and the protector, there are a few technical trade-offs worth looking at before you go bare-screen.
Shatter-resistance vs. Scratch-resistance
In the world of glass engineering, there is usually a "give and take" between these two things:
-
Shatter-resistance: To make glass survive a drop, it needs to be slightly more flexible (or "soft") to absorb the energy of the impact.
-
Scratch-resistance: To prevent scratches, the surface needs to be incredibly hard.
Typically, as glass gets better at not shattering (like Ceramic 3), it becomes more susceptible to those annoying micro-scratches from keys, coins, or even the sand and salt we deal with here in Toronto during the winter. Once a screen is scratched, the structural integrity actually goes down, making it more likely to break on the next drop anyway.
The cost of a replacement
The new displays using Ceramic 3—especially the foldable ones—are expensive. Because the glass is often fused to the OLED panel and the touch sensors, a single deep scratch or a unlucky crack can lead to a repair bill that's a significant portion of the phone's original price.
Why we still recommend a protector
Even with the best glass on the market, a screen protector serves one main purpose: it’s the sacrificial layer.
-
It takes the scratches from your pocket or bag.
-
It absorbs the initial friction of a slide across the pavement.
-
If it gets beat up, you swap the protector for a few dollars rather than replacing the whole display unit.
